We recently took a day trip down to Key West. We were nervous about driving our F-350 dually around the narrow streets but were scoping out parking lots in the area of Duval Street (the main drag).

We talked with our neighbors and learned that it was possible to rent a golf cart and park the truck at that business. After a call to Mile0Rentals, we decided on a 4-person cart for 8 hours at $160. We felt the price was definitely worth the lack of headaches! Plus, Mike would be able to look around instead of focusing on tight roads and traffic.

Of course, our first stop was the Southernmost Point. There was a line for pictures, and it had started raining, so we did the drive-by photo op.

Our next stop was to Fort Zachary Taylor (which I will show in detail on our next blog because it was pretty awesome).

After a quick stop to get the obligatory magnet and t-shirts (look for the off-the-beaten-path shop with free parking!), we were off to see what Duval Street was all about.

We found on-street parking a couple of blocks off Duval Street for only $4/hour. We paid for two hours, took a pic of the parking receipt in case ours blew off the golf cart, and walked in search of The Hemingway House. While we weren’t interested in the $17 tour (FYI-cash only), we did want to get some video and pictures of the outside. The place is surrounded by a five-foot brick wall, so I put the GoPro up and recorded some footage over the wall of the house and grounds.

Next stop – lunch! Our campground neighbor, Justin, had recommended Old Town Mexican Cafe right on Duval Street. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We highly recommend it!

With our stomachs full of delicious Mexican food, we hopped back on the golf cart to explore the rest of Key West. By this time, the streets and sidewalks were getting pretty crowded. We took a driving tour around Mallory Square, over by the harbor, and then headed down Duval Street.

While we didn’t partake in any of the drinking options scattered around Key West, some of them looked like lots of fun! We could see why so many people flock to that area, especially in the evening.

Since we still had time on the cart rental, and because we’d already had many pieces of Key Lime Pie from locations near our campground, we drove up to the only Sonic in the Keys and treated ourselves to a milkshake. It’s not every day that you can say you drove your golf cart to Sonic!

After that, we checked out a couple of the local campgrounds, you know—just in case, before returning our cart.

We would definitely recommend renting a golf cart for your day in Key West!
