Iowa – Our Visit to Des Moines and the I-80 Truck Stop

Traveling east through Iowa, we stopped for a few days at TimberLine Campground, in Waukee, Iowa. This campground is a full-service park, with a pool and other amenities. It’s located minutes from an 89-mile paved recreation trail, shopping, and downtown Des Moines.

Downtown Des Moines

The Highlife Lounge

While there, we met up with friends who took us for a great fried chicken dinner at The Highlife Lounge. While the outside didn’t look like much, except for the replica Wrigley Field sign, the inside was a step back in time. Complete with shag carpet and paneled walls, this unique restaurant and bar had a great nostalgic ambiance.

After dinner, we went on a driving tour around downtown Des Moines. As the sun began to set on the city, the State Capitol Dome shone through. We would love to go back when we can see the enormous library that is housed inside.

Iowa I-80 Truck Stop

On our way out of Iowa, we had to stop at the “largest truck stop in America.” Even if you don’t need diesel fuel at the TA, this is a sight to see. Inside the large building, there is actually a full-size tractor-trailer! There are also shopping areas, several restaurants, and the upstairs is home to a large lounge for truck drivers.

Across the street, the I-80 Trucking Museum is not to be missed.

We really enjoyed these out-of-the-way stops. Add them to your travel bucket list.

    • Had to look it up😂. It’s the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to ride, but plan to go back and ride some

      • Thank you! We are visiting the area soon for the first time. Hopefully, we can take advantage and ride bikes there. Thanks again.
