Ashland, NE & the Strategic Air Command Museum

Ashland RV Campground, Ashland NE

Sometimes you just get lucky and find a great overnight campground. Such was the case with our recent overnighter in Ashland, Nebraska. Located a short drive off I-80 between Lincoln & Omaha, Ashland RV Campground is a quiet, privately-owned gem.

Perfect for a short stay and walking distance to the quaint town of Ashland, this campground has 31 large paved sites and also a tent camping area. It has all the modern conveniences; including Wifi, a bathhouse, and laundry facilities. It is important to note that reservations must be made online as there is no office. However, the camp hosts are very knowledgeable about the area. If you’d like to stay longer, there is a 14-night maximum in a 30-day period.

Strategic Air Command Museum

Strategic Air Command – SAC

Ashland is a short drive from the Strategic Air Command Museum. This was a fun little surprise we didn’t know about. It seems we always find these great places around America that we hadn’t heard of, but enjoyed visiting. Check out our previous post about the Golden Spike Tower & Buffalo Bill’s Place here.

This museum is full of incredible exhibits of America’s past. From the early days of aviation and wartime to September 11, the history of America’s story of aviation is well-told. Here are a few of the sights.

SR-71

The SR-71 is on full display as soon as you walk into the museum. To be eye-level with this magnificent plane is jaw-dropping.

Tie Towers – by Greg Laakso

The Tie Towers sculpture by Greg Laakso consists of 1,452 neckties hung from a steel frame. This number represents the lives lost in the collapse of the North Tower. It is a very moving representation of the tragic loss of so many who had gone to work that morning, not knowing they would not be returning home.

Various other Aircraft on Display

We highly recommend a stopover at Ashland RV Campground and a visit to the Strategic Air Command Museum (SACM). We’ve been to several aircraft museums, and they each have a different story to tell.
