Felicity, California – The Center of the World

We found the center of the world, according to the man who built the place, on I-8 just across the border from Arizona to California. If you are ever in this area, you must stop. While it doesn’t look like much from the road, this hidden gem is home to “The History of the World” carved in granite!

North Platte, Nebraska

North Platte was just going to be an overnight stop but turned out to be a pretty cool find. Home to the Golden Spike Tower (overlooking the Union Pacific’s 8-mile by 2-mile rail yard) as well as Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park (the former home of Buffalo Bill Cody), this town has a lot to offer. We stayed at Holiday RV Park, and it was just a short drive to both locations.

Ashland, Nebraska

This one might cause you to say “what?”! However, just off I-80 between Lincoln & Omaha sits the Ashland RV Campground. It’s a small campground but is worth a look. Just be sure to make your reservation online as there is no office.

A short drive from Ashland is the Strategic Air Command Museum. This hidden gem is an amazing museum. If you are into anything that flies, put this on your travel list.

Shipshewana & Elkhart, Indiana

Known as the RV capital, Elkhart is home to most of the RV manufacturers in the US. A short drive away in one direction is the RV/MH Hall of Fame. The quaint town of Shipshewana is a short drive the other way.

We stayed at Shipshewana Campground South Park for a couple of days after our visit to the Grand Design Service Center. This park is in the south end of Shipshewana, and a short drive to everything this Amish community has to offer.

Des Moines, Iowa & the I-80 Truck Stop

We stopped off in Des Moines to visit friends and tour the city. We stayed at TimberLine Campground in Waukee, Iowa. If you’re ever in Des Moines, stop for fried chicken at The Highlife Lounge in downtown Des Moines, and visit their beautiful state capitol.

On your way out of Iowa, plan a stop at the “largest truck stop in America.”

As we are finding out, there are so many wonderful hidden gems around the USA. Traveling in an RV is a great way to experience all this country has to offer.
