Canada/Alaska Day 29-36

As our Fantasy 60 day Premier Alaska Adventure continued, we spent one more day in Seward before moving on to Homer.

Day 29 – Time to see the Puffins! We enjoyed the Puffin Experience at the Alaska Sea Life Center where we got to see these fun sea birds up close. We learned that many of them can dive up to 600 feet in search of food! Plus, they’re fun to look at. Then we explored the rest of the Sea Life Center.

Day 30 – We made the 170-mile drive from Seward to Homer. On the way we stopped at a pull-out for lunch. This particular location had spectacular views of Cook Inlet and the mountains along the northern edge of the Ring of Fire.

As we continued on south the views were even more breathtaking.

The drive was worth the campground views! We backed to Cook Inlet and had beautiful views all around as we camped at Heritage RV Park on “The Spit”. This is a stretch of land in Homer that goes out for about three miles. Both recreational and commercial fishermen dock there, and of course there are shops and restaurants to enjoy. We went to Harbor Grill so Mike could get seafood. However, I was very satisfied with the crispy chicken/macaroni & cheese bowl!

Mike even got to fly his kite on the beach.

We found the Spit Swing we saw on an RV Youtube channel. It is under one of the docks.

We also visited Two Sisters Bakery in Homer and everything we got was delicious!

We had a 3-night stay there with nothing on the schedule but to enjoy the area, and get caught up on rest, laundry, and whatever else needed to be done.

Day 33 – We drove a short 84 miles from Homer to Kenai and stayed at Diamond M Ranch Resort. This family-owned campground is on a working farm. Blair and Ronna Martin gave us a tour of the farm in the afternoon. That evening we had a bonfire and s’mores with the owners sharing more stories of their life in Alaska.

Day 34 – What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than going to a small town parade! Some of our group went to Kenai to enjoy the festivities in the morning. We enjoyed a delicious dinner that evening on the patio overlooking the grasslands.

Day 35 – We traveled from Kenai to Anchorage, and the 158-mile drive was scenic and uneventful. After getting settled in at the Golden Nugget RV Park, we went downtown to Glacier Brewhouse for dinner before going to find Captain James Cook Memorial statue on Cook Inlet.

Day 36 – We went to the Alaska Heritage Center to learn about the native cultures who inhabited all different parts of Alaska before the Russians and Europeans came to this part of the world. Our tour guide was a native and she was phenomenal. We had an over 2 hour walking tour, and she told us about how the different native peoples learned to adapt to their environment.

We learned how the northern people built their homes further into the ground for better insulation. They lived off whatever they could catch, and every part of their catch was used in some way. There was very little waste. There was a display of whale bones that they used as support when building their homes. And there was a full skeleton of a gray whale.

While this week had more down time for us, it was still amazing. Tomorrow we’re off to Denali!
