We visited Grand Teton National Park in early May 2025 and some areas of the park were still covered in snow and ice. This made for a spectacular backdrop for us to explore the park.
There were a few campgrounds open and we camped at Colter Bay Village at the north end of the park along Jackson Lake.
Much of Jackson Lake was still covered in a thin layer of ice. The campground had pockets of snow when we arrived, and since we were there for two weeks, we were treated to a late season snowstorm.
Jenny Lake
Of course we had to go see Jenny Lake. While the trail surrounding the lake was still not clear enough to hike, we did walk down to see the lake.
Schwabacher Landing
Probably one of our favorite places to explore was Schwabacher Landing. This area of the Snake River that runs through the park is known for the breathtaking reflections of the Tetons on the water. Go on a clear day and you’ll be amazed.
Mormon Row
Mormon Row is home to one of the most photographed barns in America. Made famous by photographer Ansel Adams, The Moulton Barn is part of the Moulton homestead. It is also a popular spot for those wishing to recreate that famous scene.
Mormon Row is home to an 1890s settlement of Moulton family and others who wanted to establish community of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, originally called Grovont. Unfortunately the harsh winters made this difficult. However, 27 homesteads were able to thrive. Today only a few buildings have survived, including the Moulton barn.
Wildlife
Over the course of our time in the park we were able to see abundant wildlife. While much of it was elk and deer, we did see a fox, an eagle, and even a momma bear and her cubs! On our way to Signal Mountain Lodge for an early morning breakfast, we saw a bear having his breakfast on the side of the road.
Jackson Hole
Of course, you can’t go to Grand Teton without visiting Jackson Hole and the famous antler arch.
Bicycling Grand Teton
There are several bike friendly trails around Grand Teton and we took full advantage of them. You can even ride into Jackson Hole if you are so inclined.
We did get a warning from the Ranger that the elk did not like bicycles, so watch out for that!
Conclusion
While it may have been a bit chilly and wet at times, for us this was the perfect time to visit Grand Teton. We experienced so much and didn’t have the crowds that are there later in the season.
